Would anyone have any suggestions on how to make a Christmas card from this image? It has nothing to do with Christmas, however I would like to use it as a card that will be accompany an ornament with the image on it. This is Nikki my last boxer (I have lost all three within 1 year) and she passed away in August from lymphoma. I have a lot of people that loved her too and gave a lot of support during her illness and while I was working on this portrait. So how do I Christmassy it up? Any suggestions at all? I would so appreciate it!!

hi, Laura, so sorry to hear about your dogs...sorry to see such a lack of participation here too; but it was inevitable with the policies in place. i would frame it with either pine boughs and balls or some other Xmas imagery, or, if you're feeling frisky, put a little Santa hat on it-in color of course, or hang an ornament from its mouth, or a pine bough...something like that. But if you don't want to mess with such a beautiful drawing( my, your work has improved immensely!), like i said, maybe a holiday themed border. Good Luck with whatever you go with! alex

So sorry to hear about your dogs, that is very rough indeed. As to your question, I think, framed with candles or holly would look nice. Something very subtle would work. Cause it is a beautiful sketch, to much might ruin it. My opinion. I like candles, it is soft and subtle.

You can tell you did this image from the heart Laura...... So think from your heart..... What did she do during Xmas, what was her favorite toy.....you could put that in her mouth, or like the other suggestions...BUT really...... THINK from your heart like when you did this beautiful lead work... God Bless and keep strong !

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I know its not an easy task to think of ideas... I think I'd like to put things around the portrait without disturbing the actual image. I love the idea of the candles. Maybe just put a little background of ornaments and tree boughs. I've always loved this photo of her taken last Christmas. Just how to do that in pencil... and keep it subtle and classy is the challenge. Yes I started this portrait shortly after she died. It was hard to work on yet very cathartic because while I was working on it the memories took me to a place where it truly felt like we were together again. Finishing it almost felt like saying goodbye again... an experience I've really never had before. She was born in my hands eight years ago and died in my arms in August. I miss her so much. Life always has a way of balancing things though. One month to the day later I became a grandma for the first time and spending time with my grandson has really helped soften the loss.... I'm glad life is like that!

Ok so I came up with this little sketch and I added it to the portrait. What do you think? Does it need a border? Should I have something on it like "Season's Greetings" or maybe just "Peace" which kinda has two meanings in this case... ? Any thoughts?

Here's another possibility. I flip flopped the corner thingy removed a little too and put it on the top to kinda frame it up a bit... like? hate? Thanks so much to anyone who has suggestions. :)

Hi there Laura, I'm so sorry to hear about your family's loss of 3 pets in a year, and happy to see the news about the birth of your grandson. Congratulations! Life is full of surprises that's for sure. What a beautiful drawing you did of your Nikki. Regarding your Xmas idea, in my opinion, your first drawing with the holiday ornament at the bottom left is wonderful. Having two ornaments on both corners may distract from her beautiful face and it makes it a bit crowded. Perhaps you can complete the image by adding dark gray lines coming from both sides of the ornament to make a frame (line disappears just behind the right ear). This "concentrates" and gives a sense of grounding to the image or as if she's looking from a window. I donno. I didn't measure the borders but you get the idea. All the best and good to see you.
